Wiener Küche for cyclists.

One of the many benefits of cycling.

If you have already read my post on riding the Danube Cycle Path some of this will already have been covered, if not you can enjoy just a few of the delicious lunches and snacks we had during our week riding beside the Danube.

Riding 60 to 70kms. every day for a week develops a very good appetite, even better the food you consume is used entirely as fuel for the kilometres ahead. The following photos show some of our refueling stops along this beautiful cycle path. To read the full Danube Ride post please click HERE.

Sweet and savoury strudels from a small cafe in the old part of Passau.

Delicious fruit slices from a small cake shop in Linz. These were too rich for one meal so we kept half for morning tea beside the river the following day.

We often self catered our evening meal and were able to pack what was left in our panniers, lunch beside the bike path after leaving Linz with half a bottle of red to wash it down.

We passed on this particular 10cm. long food offering.

Heaven if you enjoy pumpkin. The photo was taken in Melk.

An icy cold beer after we reached Krems.

Our friends Viktor and Hermi invited us to enjoy Palatschinken in their home beside The Old Danube in Vienna. Hermi is a very good cook. This batch was served warm with apricot jam and a little icing sugar.

Supper taken on their small balcony, simple food but so delicious. Washed down with some iced Austrian white wine from a local farmer.

All over Austria you can find small Weingartens, local farmers open their gardens to customers and serve their own wine and local food dishes, it's a very nice way to spend a few hours. This wine was delicious, fruity with just enough sweetness and a beautiful colour.

Hermi's sister Christl and daughter Gabi had been cooking all morning before we arrived at their home in Traiskirchen, this selection had to be consumed before we went to the Weingarten. At this point we were thinking we should ride back to Passau to work off the food we had consumed since arriving in Vienna.

With only one day left before we flew to New York and then back to Australia we decided on a short trip to Bratislava. The city still shows the neglect of the communist years but that does not extend to the quality of food available.

If you are looking for a different type of holiday this ride is one not to be missed, doing it by bike gives you plenty of time to take in the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of the Austrian countryside.
